The main objective of the project is to promote environmental education and encourage the population to correctly separate recyclable waste from common waste, in order to reduce the amount of dirt and disposables destined for landfills and, consequently, reducing the environmental impact caused by improper disposal of waste.
All of this is an action that brings together recyclable material collectors, with the support of the Fecomércio de Sustentabilidade Institute (IFeS), the Independent League of Samba Schools (Liesa), the Brazilian Association of Aluminum Can Manufacturers (Abralatas) and the State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability, through the international program Cada Lata Account.
According to the government of Rio de Janeiro, during the four days of parades, around seven tons of cans were collected, which is enough to take away the title belonging to the city of Prague, with its hundred kilos of materials collected in a week. The official announcement was made during the Parade of Champions, on Marquês de Sapucaí, by the official adjudicator of the Guinness Book, Camila Borenstain.
A income obtained from recycling will be donated to the 108 collectors hired for the action, which will result in an average amount of R$ 700 for each one. In addition, the project also collected other items from 15 Return Machine machines. Glass bottles dispensed by the bars were crushed in the ReVIDRO machine.
Vegetable oil was also collected from the kitchens in the eating areas. The title will be delivered to the Social Service of Commerce of Rio de Janeiro (Sesc RJ), which headed the initiative for the measure.
