Henriette Mathilde Maria Elizabeth Emilie Snethlage – or Emilia Snethlage, as she became known – was born on April 13, 1868, in Germany. As a child, she read a lot about science and decided to create her own herbarium, for which she collected several plants a day. At 21, without ever going to school, she began teaching at girls' schools.
As early as 1899, aged over 30, Emilia enrolled at the University of Berlin to study natural history. She graduated in 1904 and worked for a few months as an assistant zoology at the city's Museum of Natural History. The following year, she came to Brazil to work at the Museu Paraense, in Belém, where, among other tasks, she was responsible for the zoological and botanical gardens. In 1922, she went to work at the Museu Nacional, in Rio de Janeiro, where she continued to study birds.
She died in 1929.
