The first mechanical device to correct the alignment of teeth was developed by the French scientist Pierre Fauchard, in 1728. Eighteenth-century braces were used to correct prominent teeth. However, the foundations of modern orthodontics were created by the American Edward Angle, who idealized fixed appliances made of gold in the beginning of the 20th century.
