In 1948, Swiss engineer Georges de Mestral was back on a walk in the woods. He was annoyed to find burrs stuck to his clothes and his dog's fur. So he decided to find out how they managed to cling so stubbornly, without any sticky substance. Looking through a microscope, Georges found that the burrs' legs ended in little hooks, which attached themselves to anything furry. Thus was born the clasp made of numerous hooks and bows. The name "velcro" is a combination of two words:
