The São Silvestre race has been held in São Paulo since 1924. The creator of the race, journalist Cásper Líbero, watched a race in Paris that took place at night and was lit by torches that the participants carried. In the same year, he created the São Silvestre race. The first race was 8,800 meters and had 48 entries. It began at midnight on December 31st and ended on January 1st, 1925. In 1989, the race started to be held in the afternoon and, two years later, the course was extended to 15 kilometers.
