What is Ideb?

The IDEB, or Basic Education Development Index, is the main indicator of the quality of basic education in Brazil. To calculate it, the school approval rate and the performance of students in exams administered by the federal government, in Portuguese and in mathematics, are considered. The index was created in 2007 by the Ministry of Education.

Every two years, IDEB targets are set (in the form of grades ranging from 0 to 10) for public and private education, for each region/state and for each phase of education.
