Can you imagine a place with several bacteria and fungi ready to be studied? Some researchers thought.
A group of scientists from around the world, including Brazil, created a kind of “Noah's Ark” for microorganisms. But instead of keeping them alive, the ark holds their genomes.
The repository has 52,515 genomes of microorganisms that are found in the most different corners of the planet, such as lakes, oceans and soils. There are even samples of soil and plants from Minas Gerais, from the Serra da Canastra and Serra do Cipó region.
There are also new species in the collection! There are about 12,000 new genomes, including new archaebacteria, organisms that are even simpler than fungi and bacteria.
