"Memorial of Aires"

When he started writing the Memorial, Machado had lost Carolina, his lifelong wife, four years ago. This feeling is very present in the book, a mixture of reflection on old age, reconciliation with life and a portrait of the profound changes in a country that was trying to free itself from the bonds of slavery. In this work, Machado gives voice to Conselheiro Aires, a widowed diplomat who is back in Brazil after many years.
