Those in a low-income situation can try to enroll in the Federal Government's Social Electricity Tariff program to receive discounts of up to 100% on their electricity bill. The discount table, however, changes according to the family's monthly consumption.
Thus, those who use up to 30 kWh per month can receive a 65% discount and those who use between 31 kWh/month can receive 40%. Following this same logic, those who use 101 kWh/month to 220 kWh/month can have a 10% discount and those who use more than 221 kWh/month are not entitled to any discount under the program. Finally, families that consume 50 kWh of energy per month are included in the 100% discount.
To participate in the program, one must meet some of the criteria established by the Federal Government, namely: having a monthly family income per person of half the minimum wage; be a BPC beneficiary or be disabled; be enrolled in the Single Registry for Social Programs of the Federal Government (Cadúnico); be elderly with at least 65 years old; having a family member with a disability who permanently needs to use electrical appliances to continue the treatment, in addition, the gross monthly income must be a maximum of R$3,362, that is, three minimum wages.
