How was the chess game invented?
It is not clear how chess came to be. The most widely accepted theory is that the game was invented by the Chinese general Xin Han, who lived between 231 and 196 BC. He would have imagined a game that mimicked a battle, with pieces representing two kings with their armies. So the general intended to distract his men, his mind interested in battle, while he waited for winter.
Since that time, the king, knight, rook and pawn already had the same kind of shape and movement that we use today. However, the Chinese board had an extra row of squares, which represented a river, and two different pieces, the elephant (our bishop) and the mandarin (which is now the queen). Thanks to trade, the game reached Persia, where Iran is now. Afterwards, the Arabs took him to Europe with the name of Shatrani, which was translated by the Spanish as Ajedrez and arrived in Portuguese as chess.
