Unravel the illusion: which direction is this circle moving?
It all starts in 1986, when a couple has fun with their daughter at an amusement park in Santa Cruz (California). At a given moment, the mother leaves to go to the bathroom and the father ends up losing sight of the girl.
The child enters an old toy with mazes of mirrors and, at that moment, we have the first revelation of the film: there is another girl just like her.
Then the story cuts to the present years and the child named Adelaide, now an adult, is played by Lupita Nyong'o. She and her family are chased by four strangers in red who show up at her house at night.
In the first place, it is soon noticed that the strangers are exactly like the members of Adelaide's family. However, as the film unfolds, it becomes clear that other minor characters also have their clones.
These clones are the result of an experiment by the American government and they were imprisoned in tunnels and only fed on rabbits. This is a reference to animals that suffer in laboratory tests and reproduce quickly.
The clones are led by the Adelaide doppelganger named Red to rise up and take over the surface, killing their originals.
The film only tells us at the end that in the scene where the child Adelaide is lost, in fact, the one who leaves the toy is her look-alike. Thus, Red is the real child who was trapped underground and wants to take his life again.
We also have an explicit reference to the Hands Across America movement, which took place in 1986 to raise funds for people in need. However, many consider the event hypocritical, given all the racial and income disparity issues that surrounded the 1980s.
So Jordan used the bizarreness of the movement to motivate Red to become the leader of the "cult" of the clones towards their destiny. America's freedom and salvation, for in their view the surface dwellers are not taking advantage of their freedom and are destroying the planet.
