Why does an alligator stand still when it receives a beam of light?

The alligator has nocturnal habits and its eyes are adapted to dark environments. To absorb the maximum amount of light, the alligator's pupils are open and take on a rounded shape. When an animal receives a lot of light, its pupils contract. Visual accommodation takes a while and causes the alligator to remain static.
