The popular name of this Amazon tree comes from the aroma that its leaves give off, very similar to the well-known clove – a condiment used in the preparation of some sweets. The similarity is due to the predominance of the same aromatic substance in the essential oil of the two species: eugenol. Due to its antiseptic and analgesic effect, this substance is also widely used by dentists in filling teeth.
The various uses of pau-cravo led to its intense exploitation since colonial Brazil. As a result, the species was virtually extinct. Recently, researchers at the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi rediscovered a population of 189 pau-cravo individuals in the municipality of Juruti, in the state of Pará! Good news!
