The caroá (scientific name: Neoglasiovia variegata), also known as Gravatá, Gravá, Caruá, Croatá, Caraguatá and Coronatá, is a type of bromeliad with few leaves, with red or pink flowers. Its name comes from the Tupi word kara wã, which means stalk with thorn. It is a resistant plant and typical of the Caatinga areas. The caroá leaves provide fiber for making strings, fishing lines, fabrics, baskets, mats and ______________, in addition to other handcrafted and decorative items.
