With the important function of dispersing seeds in its habitat as it feeds on fruits and leaves, the howler monkey (Alouatta howler) is the third primate that lives in Brazil in the list of the 25 most threatened with extinction. Endemic to the Brazilian and Argentine Atlantic Forest, this species has been losing its place in nature since the arrival of Europeans in South America.
The exploitation of natural resources, such as wood, livestock and the extensive cultivation of coffee and sugar contribute to the reduction of the animal's habitat and, consequently, for its locomotion to urban spaces, where others suffer scratchs.
Although there are some local data on the population of the animal in Brazil, scholars and researchers have not reached a consensus on the total number throughout the national territory. The study estimates that the situation is even worse in Argentina, where some groups of the species have only 20 to 50 individuals.
Furthermore, like the dark saw marmoset, they are highly vulnerable to yellow fever. The last two outbreaks, in 2009 and 2017, strongly affected brown howler populations. Added to this, misinformation led people to kill or injure the primate with the false belief that they could be contaminated in contact with the animal. It is not the first appearance of the howler monkey on the list of most threatened primates. The species was also included in the list valid between 2012 and 2014.
