Zilda Arns was a pediatrician and did important social work in promoting the rights of children and the elderly and in combating malnutrition and infant mortality.
From Santa Catarina from Forquilhinha, Zilda was the 13th daughter of a family with 16 siblings. Born on August 25, 1934, she began studying Medicine in 1953, facing initial resistance from her father, who did not think the profession was suitable for a woman.
From 1955 to 1964, she was a pediatrician at the César Pernetta Children's Hospital, in Curitiba. In 1981, she served as the director of Maternal and Child Health at the Health Department of the State of Paraná.
In 1983, Zilda founded and started to coordinate the Pastoral da Criança, of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB). Her work was very important in the development of new public policies and in reducing infant mortality rates in the country.
She has won several awards for her work in the social area. In 2001, she was one of the Nobel Peace Prize nominees. And in 2002, she was declared the Heroine of Public Health in the Americas, a title granted by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
In 2008, Zilda assumed the direction of the Pastoral Internacional da Criança. She also founded and coordinated the Pastoral da Pessoa Aged. Her work has spread to several countries, especially in Africa, South America and Asia, benefiting the population most vulnerable by poverty.
Zilda Arns died on January 12, 2010, in Haiti, during a major earthquake. She was in Port-au-Prince on a humanitarian mission to introduce the Pastoral da Criança in that country.
