Mayana Zatz is a molecular biologist and geneticist known around the world for her pioneering research in the fields of neuromuscular and stem cell diseases.
Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1947, Mayana migrated with her family to São Paulo when she was just 8 years old. Since he was a child, he was interested in biology and thought “this thing of being a scientist, books, plants and genetics is amazing”.
Mayana studied biology at the University of São Paulo (USP), where she had her first contact with human genetics. He graduated in 1968, and the following year he began a work of genetic counseling for families with neuromuscular diseases.
Still at USP, she became a master and doctorate in genetics, in 1970 and 1974, respectively. Between 1975 and 1977, he did postdoctoral studies at the University of California (UCLA).
Back in Brazil, Mayana founded the Brazilian Association of Muscular Dystrophy (ABDIM), an entity that provides better quality of life for hundreds of patients and their families, especially those with low income familiar.
Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences since 1996, he has won several awards and decorations, such as the National Order of the Grand Cross of Merit Scientific, the L’Óreal/Unesco Prize for Women in Science, the TWAS Prize in Medical Research and the Mexico Prize for Science and Technology, among others.
Today, Mayana directs the Human Genome and Stem Cell Research Center at the institution. Among his valuable scientific contributions are the identification and mapping of genes responsible for rare human syndromes.
