The Amazon is almost mythical: a green and vast world of waters and forests, where the treetops huge numbers hide the damp birth, reproduction and death of more than a third of the species that live on the land.
The numbers are equally monumental. The Amazon is the largest biome in Brazil: in a territory of 4,196,943 million km2 (IBGE, 2004), grow 2,500 species of trees (or a third of all tropical wood in the world) and 30,000 species of plants (out of 100,000 in South America).
The Amazon Basin is the largest hydrographic basin in the world: it covers about 6 million km2 and has 1,100 tributaries. Its main river, the Amazon, crosses the region to empty into the Atlantic Ocean, releasing about 175 million liters of water into the sea every second.
Estimates place the region as the largest tropical timber reserve in the world. Its natural resources – which, in addition to wood, include huge stocks of rubber, nuts, fish and minerals, for example – represent an abundant source of natural wealth. The region is also home to great cultural wealth, including traditional knowledge about uses and how to exploit these natural resources without depleting them or destroying the habitat.
All this grandeur does not hide the fragility of the local ecosystem, however. The forest lives from its own organic material, and its delicate balance is extremely sensitive to any interference. The damage caused by human action is often irreversible.
Furthermore, the Amazon's natural wealth dramatically contrasts with the region's low socioeconomic indices, with low demographic density and growing urbanization. Thus, the use of forest resources is strategic for the region's development.
