Known by scientific name Amorphophallus titanium, the cadaver flower has this rather peculiar name because of the smell of rotten meat that it exudes to attract insects such as flies and beetles.
O odor it is so unique to the plant that it is compared to the same smell of a “dead” body, as reported by the director of the UC Botanical Garden, Paul Licht. However, despite this small detail, it attracts many visitors to the park, as its flowering is really rare, happening between 8 and 10 years.
It originates from Indonesia and due to deforestation in tropical forests, unfortunately, it is already threatened with extinction. It is rare, unlike any other common flower, it has purple petals in the center and a yellow receptacle that can measure almost 2.5 meters in height.
According to information from the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Ohio, when it blooms, on the first night, it increases the temperature in its yellow part, which can reach up to 36.6 degrees Celsius, to help spread the bad odor and attract more insects.
The blossoming of the corpse flower at the Chicago Botanical Garden is quite a fact, and much celebrated. After all, every time a flower of this level blooms, it is a cause for celebration and a lot of study.
The last time it bloomed at the UC Botanical Garden, it even got a nickname. Called Trudy, as it is a male flower, when it was on display it attracted around 2,300 visitors the weekend it bloomed. He was a mere 1.4 meters tall at the time. Fascinating, isn't it?
