The brand recently demonstrated how it is investing in technology to stay ahead of competitors. Recently, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), BMW announced a model of color changing car in seconds at the push of a button: the iX Flow. Know more!
BMW said during the announcement that the color-changing technology comes from an electric ink developed by E Ink. In this way, it is understood that it is about electrophoretic coloring: the dye is composed of millions of microcapsules the size of a strand of hair.
In these microcapsules, there would be white and black ink, which would be charged with magnetism, with white having a negative charge and black having a positive charge. Thus, when pressing the button, the magic of electromagnetic stimulation happens, releasing only the chosen color that will be visible on the surface of the car. Wonderful, isn't it?
So far, there is no date in sight for the announcement and launch of vehicles with this technology for purchase. However, as the automaker decided to announce the idea soon, it is expected that in the near future it will be possible to see some cars that change color walking around.
Furthermore, the manufacturer emphasized that everything is still in the testing phase and that, for now, this technology would only be possible for white and black pigments. This is because changing colors could impact the efficiency of cars, so that it would be easier to switch between white and black. While the dark surface has a high level of heat absorbency, the white color would be able to reflect sunlight efficiently.
Until the color-changing car arrives, we'll keep an eye out for updates. You can check the news here at School Education.
