Optical Illusion of the Arch May Confuse You

This popular technique gives us a glimpse into how our brains work and what the known limitations of our neurological and visual systems are. The illusion we will be discussing here makes for a very familiar illustration, as it has confused many of the social media users where it has spread.

This image is one of the many illusions that an American cognitive scientist, Roger Newland Shepard, created in his book Mind Sights. At first glance, you will be surprised to see something unusual in this image. At first you'll see an arch, but you won't be able to tell which way it's actually facing.

According to the creator of this illusion that seems impossible to break, if he were represented in three dimensions, the arch would appear twisted or inverted, so that the pedestal to the right of the arch would be suspended from the air. The Arc de Triomphe in Paris serves as a real-world illustration of what we see in the picture.
