The most spoken slang in Brazil

To discover the jargon most used by Brazilians, Preply interviewed 1584 people from all regions of the country throughout the month of April.

In addition to older and more ingrained slang, such as “mano”, the top 10 expressions most cited by Brazilians include:

  1. sextou, cited whenever the weekend begins;
  2. bullshit, which indicates the beginning of some confusion;
  3. Zueira, the same as “joke” or “review”;
  4. exchange ideas, a word quoted by someone who wants to talk;
  5. crush, used to name a person to whom the speaker is attracted;
  6. perrengue, which means to go through difficulty or trouble;
  7. firmness, word named to indicate certainty, confirmation or commitment;
  8. sealed, which is the same as “killed” or “did it beautifully”;
  9. bestowed, a very common slang in northeastern Brazil that means “fool” or “fool”;
  10. Rancid, which calls sensations such as discomfort or contempt for another person, place or thing.

According to the Preply survey, 74% of respondents said they have already said "sextou" in any situation, while 64% have already mentioned the word “treta” and 62% have already spoken about “nuisance” and “exchange a idea".

The survey also pointed out that 43% of respondents do not like the use of some jargon. Among the most hated are “ranço”, which is rejected by 30% of people, “sealed” (29%), “abestado” (28%) and “crush” and “sextou” (25% each).
