According to the Council, the ban on medical prescriptions was based and justified on the absence of a scientific basis that guarantees the benefit and safety of the anabolic steroid. When applied to the patient, the resource does not meet the necessary guarantees. The prescription was prohibited along with professional courses on anabolic steroids, advertising or any other association of androgens.
Showing support for the Council are the Brazilian institutions of Sports Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabology, Cardiology, Urology, Dermatology, Geriatrics and other representations. together, they signed a public letter, in March, to warn about the increase in complications from the use of anabolic hormones.
“This resolution is a victory for good medicine and science. It protects society from a narrative that has been told that there is safety in the use of hormone therapies for these purposes and in supraphysiological doses, which is not corroborated by the available scientific evidence and puts the lives of patients at risk", informed Paulo Augusto Miranda, president of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology (SBEM).
According to these medical institutions, there is no scientific evidence that the patient is safe when using these hormones. Emphasizing the danger, they also informed that there are professionals who do not have medical ethics and who work based on marketing, forgetting science.
“Denominations that have a lot of marketing, instead of science, in addition to not being recognized by any medical entity”, they informed in the public letter.
Because they lack scientific basis and safety, anabolic hormones can cause several problems to the health, such as: cardiovascular problems, increased blood pressure, liver problems, hormonal changes, sexual impotence and decreased fertility, psychological damage and others.
The Ministry of Health points out that the use is problematic and can cause other disorders in addition to those mentioned above.
