The first historic flag of Brazil was present on the sails of the 12 ships that arrived in the country on April 22, 1500. This flag displayed the Cross of the Military Order of Christ, made up of a white Greek cross superimposed by a cross pattée red.
This order financed voyages to combat heretics and expand Christian influence, and countries like Portugal and Spain were affiliated with it.

Shortly after the historic defeat of Napoleon, the Portuguese decided to stay in Brazil for a while longer. This generated dissatisfaction and led to the demand for the return of D. João VI, but as a constitutionalist monarch.
During this period, the Portuguese Parliament created the Flag of the Constitutional Regime, which was the last flag of Portuguese origin to be flown in Brazilian territory.
Ignoring the Portuguese orders, D. Pedro I proclaimed the independence of Brazil in September 7, 1822. He chose green and yellow as representative colors of the country, resulting in the creation of the Imperial Flag of Brazil, the first Brazilian national flag.
This flag was composed of a green rectangle with a yellow diamond and the Brazilian Coat of Arms in the center – which later served as a reference for the one currently used.
With the end of the Monarchy in 1889, the Republic was established in Brazil through a military coup led by Marechal Deodoro da Fonseca. On November 15 of that year, a provisional flag was raised, replacing the Imperial Flag. This flag was composed of seven green and six yellow stripes, in addition to a blue square in the upper corner with silver stars representing the states existing at the time.
