Have you ever noticed the “basketballs” that are on high voltage wires and wondered what their use was? Did we get it right? We have sad news: they are not specifically basketballs, despite the resemblance.
There are several theories and urban legends circulating about the function of these items. Despite the disappointment that they aren't really basketballs, they play a key role in high voltage wires. Check out!

The daytime signal spheres, as they are officially called, are placed on the power wires with a very important purpose: to avoid collisions between planes and helicopters with such structures during their flights.
It is surprising, but the reality is that the aircraft they can collide with the light wires, and several accidents that have occurred in Brazil and in the world prove this, thus being a concrete danger. One of these fateful accidents resulted in the death of singer Marília Mendonça. The plane crashed due to the absence of adequate signaling on the high voltage wires.
For this reason, such spheres are strategically positioned in regions where air traffic is more intense, such as near airports.
The red or orange color of the daytime signaling spheres has a specific explanation related to the norms of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT ). The institution defines that the coloring of these objects must be very striking to ensure better visibility during the day.
In addition to the hue, the spheres' manufacturing material is carefully selected to generate their effectiveness and durability. These items need to be resistant to climate conditions adverse events, such as rain and wind, and even electrical discharges.
This is fundamental for the spheres to also be able to act as a kind of lightning rod, protecting the power wires and nearby areas from possible damage caused by atmospheric phenomena.
