A bird almost entirely green in the middle of the forest may well go unnoticed when it is quiet and resting. But if you have the opportunity to search the forests along the coast from São Paulo to Paraná, with luck, you can find the purple-tailed parrot. It only exists in the Atlantic Forest and, although it disguises itself well among the leaves, it displays strong colors in part of its plumage. The top of the head and throat are purplish – hence its name – the forehead is red, the sides of the head are blue and the tip of the tail is greenish-yellow.
The red-tailed parrot, like other parrots, builds its nests in tree hollows. Its eggs are white, rounded and relatively small, being hatched mainly by females, which, in general, are fed by males during this period.
These birds forage in treetops and sometimes in fruit bushes. They prefer the seeds to their pulp. It is with its strong beak that the red-tailed parrot, like other parrots, grinds the seeds of the fruits it eats. In addition to fruits, it usually feeds on buds, flowers and soft leaves. And he still happens to include in his diet some invertebrates, such as insects.
Like other parrots, the red-tailed parrot is highly coveted as a pet for the beauty of its plumage and its ability to imitate words. The destruction of the forest where it lives and illegal trade are the main causes of the species' threat of extinction. Among Brazilian parrots, this is one of the most at risk of disappearing because of the hunting of its young, which are sold at high prices within the country and abroad.
To collaborate with the preservation of the species, it is necessary to conserve the environment where the red-tailed parrot lives and breeds, and also help fight the clandestine trade in wild animals. If we don't buy birds from wild animal traffickers and pass along the information about what puts the life of the red-tailed parrot at risk, we will already be contributing so that it continues to exist.
