Maria Esther Bueno is one of the greatest icons of Brazilian sport of all times. The best tennis player of the 20th century in Latin America was born in São Paulo, on October 11, 1939.
At age 11, she started to practice tennis at Clube Tietê. From an early age, she drew attention to her elegant style – because of him, she was nicknamed “The Ballerina”.
Her dedication and talent paid off. She won 71 single world titles and was No. 1 in the world in 1959, 1964 and 1966. She was the only Brazilian tennis player to have her name inscribed in the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1978, the same year she won a wax statue at the famous London museum Madame Tussaud.
Maria Esther also stood out in the doubles tournament and won an individual gold medal and two silver in pairs, at the Pan American Games in São Paulo, in 1963.
In 1967, she suffered a serious elbow injury. She ended up leaving the courts in the 1970s. In her later years, she was a sports commentator on pay TV.
