Brazil is home to one of the greatest biodiversity in the world. There are hundreds of thousands of species of living beings here, many of them endemic, meaning they do not exist anywhere else. The richness of Brazilian species is so great that scientists keep finding new creatures every day. That's right, every day researchers disclose the discovery of some Brazilian species. But our biodiversity is in danger, as thousands of species are at risk of extinction.
The reason is mainly the destruction of natural environments in Brazilian biomes – Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, Cerrado, Pantanal and Pampas. Therefore, from time to time, scientists from all over Brazil gather to assess which species are in danger of extinction here. Endangered species usually have a small population, live in few places, or have already had most of their original habitat destroyed.
To prevent endangered species from becoming extinct, the Chico Mendes Institute for Conservation of Biodiversity (ICMBio), an agency linked to the Ministry of the Environment, created the "National Action Plan for Conservation". The name says a lot: it is a plan of actions that the country must develop to guarantee the conservation of the species.
In some cases, a National Action Plan (PAN) is prepared for a single species, such as the jaguar or the armadillo - these species are in such a critical situation that they deserved a single plan for them. But there are times when the goal is greater, such as the conservation of Atlantic Forest parrots or the amphibians and reptiles of Serra do Espinhaço.
To prepare each action plan, ICMBio joins other government agencies, researchers, non-governmental organizations, companies and managers of conservation units such as parks and reserves biological. As unity is strength, together they analyze what problems threaten the preservation of the species and how we must act to overcome them.
We need to be aware of the importance that each species plays in the ecosystem and join efforts to ensure that they are preserved. […]
