Benefits of Martial Arts: Tai Chi Chuan at any age

With the popularization of practices such as meditation, oriental habits and techniques have captivated people for their benefits. At the same time, there is still a misconception about martial arts and their contribution to a healthy body and mind.

In order to present justifications and explanations about these benefits, we created this article. In addition to listing them, we will seek to differentiate such ancient contributions from the idea of “fights”, and their application to all ages. For this, we use the Tai Chi Chuan for example.

What is this martial art and where does it come from?

First, it is necessary to distinguish the practice of martial arts from the concept of “taking fight lessons”. The most important point of this differentiation is precisely to remove the idea of violence from this practice.

In this way, people's minds are opened not only to Tai Chi Chuan, but also to other arts. With this, the practice and its resulting advantages reach the audiences that benefit most: children and elderly.

Specifically, Tai Chi Chuan is a Chinese martial art whose movements tend to be slow and silent. Practice is easily distinguishable from others in which speed, intensity and screams are applied – a way to release our energy in the blows.

In controlled movements, it is believed to circulate the vital energy of the body – the Chi Kung. For that, you need to know how to do it.

Precisely because of its greater lightness, it is a martial art recommended for all ages. It can even be interpreted as a meditation in which there is movement, plus even more benefits.

The use of Tai Chi Chuan for vitality in old age

In old age, people tend to lose strength, mobility and balance. The concentrated and slow practice of Tai Chi Chuan not only prevents loss, but helps in recovering the vitality of the elderly.

You main benefits of this martial art include:

  • Greater disposition;
  • Muscle strengthening and recovery of muscle mass;
  • Improved balance;
  • Training and improvement of concentration;
  • Stress relief and strengthening of the immune system.

Despite requiring less power, holding poses and concentrated movements requires considerable effort. Likewise, it is for the same reason that it poses no risk to joints and the structure of already more fragile bodies.

How many people in old age do you usually see working body and mind in some martial art?

The time has come to change concepts about practices such as Tai Chi Chuan. And this is not just true for the elderly, as you will see below.

Discipline and body and mental health of young people and children

More commonly, children and young people are encouraged to participate in martial arts as a form of sport. Even so, the idea of “struggle” alienates others, and can even disrupt the process.use by schools, for example.

After all, if everyone were aware of its benefits and what the practice is like, any parents and guardians would be interested in enrolling them. In addition to everything mentioned for the elderly, young people can benefit from Tai Chi Chuan in several ways:

  • Stimulation of bone growth and muscle development;
  • Improved social interaction;
  • Greater concentration on tasks, including the school routine;
  • Better control of emotions, still coming to the fore.

In a fast-paced world with many distractions, the combination of physical activity with help in emotional and mental control is essential. This is yet another form of prevention for various diseases that reach worrying levels, such as depression.

How to practice Tai Chi Chuan correctly?

a school of martial arts like Tangshou Academy teaches classes with specialized professionals who studied with great masters. As in any sport or art, it is not possible to start without proper support and structure.

That way, in order to seek all the benefits and be in a circle of people with the same goal, always look for a gym. Only a professional knows exactly what your condition allows and the type of practice that best suits your needs and desires.

Is there more than one type of Tai Chi Chuan?

Tai Chi Chuan

We will not make the matter too complex, especially since you will learn everything you need from a good master. However, we found it interesting to briefly share some Tai Chi Chuan Variations:

  1. Yang Style: It is the most popular form and the most practiced around the world. His trademark is slow and smooth movements, but continuous and with greater openness. It derives from the Chen style, mentioned below.
  2. Chen Style: shorter movements, a little more abrupt and with added jumps. It also has several benefits and can be practiced by more experienced people in martial arts and young people.
  3. Wu/Hao Form: tall posture, with slow movements and has the smallest form of the styles.
  4. Traditional Wu Style: Slightly different movements with inclination and variations compared to other styles.
  5. Sun Style: developed by Sun Lutang, is the union of Wu/Hao and Chuan styles.

It is important to say that one style is not better than the other. An interest in martial arts and its benefits is a first step, but it is through experimentation that you will find yourself. So make sure you choose a good gym.

Tai Chi Chuan

No age limits or benefits

It is with regularity that one notices the improvements in the mental aspects and in the health of the body in general. Despite the citation of the younger or older public, the benefits are noticed at absolutely any point in life.

Our preference for citing them was only due to the current perception of these groups about the martial arts. With some degree of variation, it is certain that you will enjoy the same advantages if you are at a different age.

Tai Chi Chuan still needs to be more widespread, but you are one more person now aware of the gains that the practice provides. Don't miss the opportunity to feel an internal and external change for yourself.
