Tegu are animals with rare characteristics. They are among the few reptile species that have parental care. Do you know what that means? That the parents take care of the egg until the baby comes out. Females of this species can lay from 30 to 36 eggs, which hatch in a period between 60 and 90 days.
Because of their large size and their meat, which is considered tasty, tegu are hunted by indigenous peoples for subsistence, which for them is a legal practice. However, other people also illegally hunt tegu to eat and to extract and sell the animal's hide.
Excessive hunting of these lizards can have negative consequences for the environment in which they live. This is because tegu have an important role in nature: they help to disperse seeds in the forest (by eating in one place and defecating in another), fight pests (by feeding on insects) and even the excessive proliferation of mice (because rodents are also in their menu). So, how about helping to preserve Teiu by telling your friends what you've just discovered about this South American giant?
