Why did fiber optics revolutionize communication?

Ah! What would communication be without optical fibers... Telephony, cable TV, computer networks and transmission of data, medical-surgical instruments and sensors are just a few examples of systems that use fibers optics!

We can say that optical fibers are very thin strands made of a special type of glass surrounded by two layers of plastic material. Light signals pass through such glass threads, carrying, for example, audio and video data. It's like that…

When we talk on the phone, our voice is transformed into electrical signals that are transmitted to a telephone exchange, where are converted into light signals by a photo-emitter and sent, through an optical fiber, to another central, where they are converted by a photodetector into electrical signals, which are sent to the phone we're talking to, where they are turned back into voice.

Explained step-by-step, the data transmission process via fiber optics seems slow, but it is extremely faster, more light and has a far greater range of transmitted signal than, for example, copper cables, which dominated telecommunications until recently back.

Today, therefore, the transmission of data, images, sounds and signals is more efficient because of optical fibers. In addition to their high ability to transmit various types of information, they are also immune to electromagnetic interference, this means that there is no loss of clarity in the image, voice, etc.

So, are they or are they not revolutionary?
