Well, to understand how we listen, it is necessary to embark on a journey inside our ear. And the journey begins like this: when we speak or play an instrument, the sound causes vibrations in the air. These vibrations enter our ear and beat, like a drum, on a very thin membrane called the eardrum. The tapping on the eardrum moves three very small bones that we have in our ear. They are the smallest bones in our entire body! Their movement stimulates other structures, like the cochlea, inside the ear.
The stimulus that started when we spoke or played an instrument, after going all this way, reaches the auditory nerve, which carries the message to the hearing area in our brain.
Let's recap?
Vibrations in the air, eardrum, small bones, cochlea, auditory nerve and cerebral cortex. Our brain interprets what we hear! In fact, our ear picks up sound, but our brain listens!
Isn't that super interesting?
