IBGE says that Brazil has gained over 72 km² of territory

Frequently, new news is published by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) and, recently, the agency said that Brazil increased its territory by 72 km². Before, the country had 8,510,345.540 km, in 2021, and increased to 8,510,417.771 km last year. This increase was due to new international border delineations. See more details below.

This territorial increase occurred in stretches of Amazonas, Rondônia, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. According to IBGE, the calculation of this new area was made from updated satellite images.

Thus, it was concluded that the expansion was 72km². This number was even higher than previously thought. It is noteworthy that there was no change in borders, only the measurement of surfaces in stretches of the border in the states mentioned.

After all, how are the calculations done?

Reliable sources said that the calculations are made based on data provided by the Commissions Boundary Demarcators of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the improvement of cartographic inputs (Images of satellite).

Limit Updates

In addition, the IBGE recently released updated maps with the new boundaries of 174 Brazilian municipalities. Changes in the political-administrative division took place between May 1, 2021 and July 31, 2022.

Regarding the largest number of changes in municipal boundaries, we have the following sequence:

  • Rio Grande do Sul – 61 municipalities
  • Pernambuco – 50 municipalities
  • Paraná – 47 municipalities

In addition to these three main municipalities, there were also changes in Mato Grosso (6), Maranhão (3), Rio Grande do Norte (3), Tocantins (2) and Goiás (2).

When will the updates happen?

Updates will occur after the publication of the new legislation. For more accuracy, Roberto Tavares, coordinator of Territorial Structures, says that it deals with the court decision and reports/opinions technicians prepared by the respective state bodies responsible for the political-administrative division of each state and forwarded to IBGE.
