It may sound incredible, but studying the diseases of the past can also help to clarify how humans spread across the world. When the first human migrants left the African continent, they took with them the parasites that lived in their bodies. Wherever environmental conditions allowed, these parasites were able to perpetuate their transmission cycles.
For example, during the overland crossing of the Beringea region, the intense cold did not allow the parasites to continue their cycle. So, the human beings who arrived in America this way were free from these diseases. However, the same parasites found in prehistoric Africa were also found in America – more specifically, in Mexico, in the Andes region and in Brazil. How to explain this?
Possibly, man has found other ways to reach our continent! How parasites originated in African ancestors and accompanied host migrations across the Asian continent, some scientists think they got here by crossing the Ocean Pacific.
