All about wild cat

O wild cat (Leopardus tigrinus) is a feline species that inhabits almost all of Brazil and can be found in several biomes. On average, it weighs 2.5 kg and measures 50 cm (plus 30 cm with the tail).

In addition to being threatened with extinction due to the destruction of its habitat, the wild cat also suffers from slaughter by people who think that this is a dangerous species, but, despite being exclusively carnivorous, the L. Tigrinus feeds on rodents, small birds and lizards.

Characteristics

This species is similar in size and weight to a domestic cat, but has similar coat color patterns to a jaguar. Like other species of the genus leopard, the wild cat is exclusively carnivorous.

Solitary individuals have nocturnal and crepuscular activity. After an eleven-week gestation, they have one to four young and can live up to eleven years.

Habitat

O L. tigrinus inhabits all of Brazil, with the exception of the south of Rio Grande do Sul. It can be found in parts of Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia and other countries. It can live in rain forests, in the

Atlantic forest, amazon, Pantanal, as well as in the dry areas of the northeastern Caatinga.

Both at high altitudes and close to the sea. Although this feline adapts so well to different biomes, it needs natural vegetation to survive.

Conservation

O L. tigrinus is a victim of deforestation for agriculture and livestock. Being solitary and territorial, populations of this species are fragmented and fragile to the destruction of the natural habitat.

In addition, the wild cat is also a victim of hunting for the fur trade and slaughter by poultry breeders. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the wild cat as a species in a situation vulnerable to extinction.
