Registration for the 15th Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (Obmep) is now open. This year, the theme of the event is indigenous peoples. The biggest scientific competition in the country is aimed at elementary (6th to 9th grade) and high school students.
Obmep is carried out by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa). Entries must be made by schools, via the internet, on the Obmep page. The deadline ends on March 15. The announcement of the winners is scheduled for December 3rd.

The tests will be applied on May 21 (first phase) and September 28 (second phase). Assessments will be distributed according to the student's education level: level 1 (sixth and seventh grades), level 2 (eighth and ninth grades) and level 3 (any year of high school).
Municipal, state, federal and private schools can participate in the Olympics. Last year, 18.2 million students from 99.4% of Brazilian municipalities participated.
Obmep awards students from public and private schools separately. Those from public schools will receive 6,500 medals (500 gold, 1,500 silver and 4,500 bronze) and up to 46,200 Honorable Mention certificates.
Students from private institutions will receive 975 medals (75 gold, 225 silver and 675 bronze) and up to 5,700 Honorable Mention certificates. Gold, silver or bronze medal winners guarantee entry into scientific initiation programs.
The competition is promoted with resources from the Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications (MCTIC) and the Ministry of Education. It helps to encourage the study of mathematics in Brazil, identify talented young people and promote social inclusion through the dissemination of knowledge.
Obmep 2019 has the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). In addition to the organization's seal, all promotional material for the Olympics has the logo of the International Year of Indigenous Languages, a UNESCO initiative.
