The diplomat can also participate in international missions in different countries and hold positions in specialized agencies of the United Nations (UN).

How to be a diplomat?

There is no specific course to become a diplomat. Those who are interested in this career do not need to have a degree in International Relations, Law or Economics, but rather have a degree in any higher education course. What really matters is being approved in the public tender held by the Rio Branco Institute (IRBr).

The body is linked to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), better known as Itamaraty, and is responsible for the education, training and improvement course of Brazilian diplomats.

What is the public tender for the diplomat career like?

The public contest for diplomats, known as the Contest for Admission to the Diplomatic Career (CACD), is organized annually by Itamaraty in partnership with the Center for Selection and Promotion of Events at the University of Brasília (CESPE/UNB).

Requirements to be a diplomat

  1. b) be Brazilian (a) born;
  2. c) enjoy political rights;
  3. d) be up to date with electoral obligations
  4. e) be up to date with the obligations of the Military Service, in the case of male candidates;
  5. g) be at least 18 years of age;
  6. h) present physical and mental aptitude for the exercise of the duties of the position, verified through pre-employment exams.
  7. f) submit a higher-level graduation course conclusion diploma, issued by a Brazilian university recognized by the Ministry of Education.

Registration for the diplomat exam

Registration for the test must be done exclusively online. After filling out the registration form, it is necessary to choose one of the 27 Brazilian cities where will carry out the assessment (26 state capitals, in addition to Brasília) and pay the fee, which in 2018 was BRL 230. The test is applied in three phases.

What is the Diplomatic Exam??

A first phase it is an objective test composed of 73 questions, each with four items for judgment in right or wrong. It is worth mentioning that each question marked in disagreement with the template will cancel a correctly marked question.

At this stage, knowledge of Portuguese (10), English (9), History of Brazil (11), World History (11), International politics (12), Geography (6), Notions of economics (8), and Notions of law and public international law (6).

A second stage of the contest consists of a written test in Portuguese and English for the 260 candidates who obtain the best grades in the objective test.

At third phase the candidate has four hours of three days to discuss the contents:

  1. History and Geography of Brazil
  2. International politics and economics
  3. Notions of law and public international law, Spanish language and French language.

How many vacancies for diplomats does the Rio Branco Institute offer?

It depends on each contest. In the most recent one, in 2018, the CACD made 26 vacancies available for those interested in the diplomat career.

Only the best placed who fill the limit of the number of vacancies can enroll in the Course of Formation of the Rio Branco Institute, and finishing the course is essential for the servant's confirmation as diplomat.
