The scream of a guigo is already frightening, as it is very loud. But when male and female voice their voices together to defend their territory, better cover their ears. They form a duet that screams loudly in the forest. A way to scare off invading groups.
The guigo-de-coimbra-filho is one of the most recent species of primates discovered. It was described by scientists in 1999 and named after a distinguished Brazilian primatologist: Ademar Coimbra Filho.
This small primate lives in groups that vary between two and five individuals. As adults, in addition to singing in pairs, they like to live together for life and raise their puppies. In general, this species has only one offspring per year. Gestation lasts about six months and, when the guigo baby is born, it is the male who carries it. The female breastfeeds the offspring until six months of age and, after that, the small primate is considered independent.
It is in the forest that the guigo-de-coimbra-filho live, in a space called the medium stratum, which is at an altitude of five to nine meters. There, hanging from the branches, they like to rest most of the time. They prefer to eat fruits, but they usually also consume leaves, seeds, flowers and some insects.
The clearing of the forest to raise cattle and agriculture and the constant fires are the reasons for the decrease in the space that this little outrigger needs to live.
