Employment platform 99pop created an internship program exclusively for black students, titled “Better Internship of the World” (MEM). Already in its 2nd edition, the program aims to include black people and other minority groups in companies with the aim of increasing diversity and reinforcing the importance of racial equality.
In addition, the MEM seeks to modify the current scenario and provoke an action in organizations to expand the diversity on your staff. The program directs students to an opportunity to demonstrate all of their abilities, regardless of their ethnicity.

The decision to create the program came through a survey carried out by the platform itself, which realized that black candidates do not pass the final stages of the selection process for interns.
Of every 20 students hired by companies between 2015 and 2017, only one is black. In view of this, the first edition of the MEM took place in 2018 and allocated a large part of these students within the labor market.
According to the co-founder of 99jobs, Du Migliano, the average enrollment for past editions is 3,500 applicants for 7 vacancies (500 candidates per vacancy). In addition, the first edition of the program had only 500 students enrolled, a fact that demonstrates a certain fear that young people have in working in companies that do not have black people in their composition collaborative.
The program relies on the assistance of Dahra Quintella, a black woman leader in customer experience at 99jobs, with an important role in recruiting young black students. For this, it relies on the work of communities to publicize registrations and black influencers who have a voice on social networks.
In addition, NGOs also have their role within the program. One example is the Instituto Identidades do Brasil (ID_BR), which promotes actions such as the MEM with the aim of assisting in the socioeconomic growth of the population in the country.
Du Migliano states that there is a great need for companies to seek to attract young people to them, making available managers who have the same profile as the candidate to carry out the interview and hiring. In this way, black students experience great pain in not seeing themselves represented within large companies.
In surveys carried out by 99jobs, young people stated that they would like to be hired for internship vacancies by other black employees. In this way, companies participating in the MEM need to adapt to this condition of inserting black employees in different positions and positions within the company.
The co-founder also states that, currently, candidates prioritize companies that seek to end barriers linked to prejudice, since this factor separates people due to appearance and not to the merits they it has. Thus, it is of paramount importance that participating companies engage in ending structural racism.
The internship program developed by 99jobs has a development grid for young people who participate in the MEM. Thus, the program will feature coaching and mentoring with several prestigious professionals, in addition to going through a month of immersion in large Brazilian companies.
