A rich man had a daughter who was very sick, he did his best to make his daughter healthy again. He called the best doctors in town and gave them the best medicinal plants to make medicines, but everything failed. His daughter was getting sicker and sicker.
One day, an old doctor went to see the rich man's daughter.
“She can be cured,” said the doctor. - For that, you'll need to get some fresh figs.
It was February and the fresh figs would only be available after a few months. So when the rich man heard this, he was worried. Even so, he decided to make an ad:
- Whoever brings fresh figs for my daughter will receive a great reward.
The announcement was made all over the city.
Everyone wanted the reward, but no one had fresh figs to give. In the same city, two very poor brothers lived. The older brother was smart and cunning, he used to stay at home and do nothing. The younger brother was honest, kind and also smart, he worked all day to get food and money for himself and his lazy brother. The brothers had a fig tree in the garden, the younger brother had taken good care of it. When the brothers heard the announcement, they went to see the fig tree. There were small figs on the tree, but they weren't ripe enough to be eaten. Even so, the brothers decided to take them and try their luck.
On the way, the brothers met an old woman. She stopped them and asked:
– What are you carrying in these baskets?
The older brother was cunning and said:
- I'm carrying rotten eggs in my basket.
– Are you really carrying rotten eggs? - Asked the old lady.
The younger brother said:
– I'm carrying figs in my basket. They're not very mature, but you can keep one.
And so he gave the old lady a fig.
The old lady smiled and said:
– The figs are nice and ripe.
When the brothers arrived at the rich man's house, the older brother offered his basket first, saying:
- I brought the best fresh figs for your daughter. They are from my garden.
And as he said this, he opened his basket. But instead of figs, the basket contained rotten eggs!
The rich man became angry and ordered his servants to expel the older brother from his house. Then the younger brother introduced himself and said:
- I brought some fresh figs for your daughter. They may not be very ripe, but these are all I had in my fig tree.
So he opened his basket. And, look at this, the basket was full of fresh, ripe figs!
The rich man was happy and immediately took the figs to his daughter. By eating them, she started to get healthy again. The younger brother received the promised reward.
