IAEA: What is it and what is it for?

Founded in July 1957 and headquartered in Vienna, Austria, the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) is an autonomous international organization, which is responsible for managing nuclear matters, in the sense that it values ​​the safe and peaceful use of atomic energy, preventing this energy from being used for nuclear.

The agency maintains direct relations with the UN (United Nations Organization), which is a company with the objective of facilitating the cooperation in terms of international law and security, economic development, social progress, human rights and peace worldwide.

IAEA objectives

  • Promote the peaceful and safe use of Atomic Energy throughout the world, based on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
  • Prohibition of the use of atomic energy for military purposes such as, for example, the manufacture of atomic bombs.
  • Support member countries in improving scientific and technological capabilities in peaceful applications of atomic energy.
  • Promote among member countries the use of nuclear techniques aimed at sustainable development.
  •  Development of programs aimed at the safety and protection of people and the environment against the harmful effects of nuclear radiation.

Participants:

Currently, 138 nations are part of the IAEA. These are sympathetic to the fact of atomic energy for scientific and peaceful purposes. Annually, representatives of these nations meet for a General Conference in which they elect 35 members. to the Board of Governors, responsible for preparing the decisions that will be ratified by the Conference General.

Importance

In addition to the social and sustainable issue that the organization values, it is of crucial importance to world security, especially with regard to the use of nuclear weapons.

As several countries have technologies aimed at generating nuclear energy and producing atomic weapons (many even have these weapons), it is essential that there be a supervisory body for the control and inspection of this type of energy.
