USA Scholarships for High School Students

Studying abroad is a common goal among many higher education students who aim to gain new experiences and learn about different cultures. However, in the case of high school students, this interest is no different.

Thinking specifically about this audience, the program Global Citizens of Tomorrow, in partnership with the international organization AFS, offers 10 scholarships for one academic year in the United States.

The objective of the partnership is to provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Brazilian students who cannot afford the costs involved in cultural exchange.

In addition to scholarships at an American school, selected students will receive:

• Accommodation in a voluntary family home;
• Round trip ticket;
• Medical insurance with coverage of up to 1 million dollars;
• Guidance before, during and after the experience;
• $120 per month allowance throughout the program;
• Visa fees paid for legalized entry into the territory.

Requirements

To participate in the selection, you must meet the following requirements:

• Be a student in the first or second year of high school;
• Study at a public school or be a full-time scholar at a private school;
• Have a family income of up to six minimum wages;
• Present performance above 80% in the academic record;
• Have an intermediate or advanced level of English.

Phases of the selection process

Phase 1: Application and Online Mathematics and English Test, as well as writing in English

First, the student must register on the AFS website, from August 14 to October 15, 2015. After completing the registration form, the participant will be submitted to the online test, composed by 15 multiple-choice math and 15 English questions, plus a short essay in English.

Phase 2: Regional Selection

Those who pass the online test must participate in the Regional Selection, scheduled to take place between November 14th and 15th, 2015.

Phase 3: Completing the Application

In Application Part I, personal information will be requested and the completion of the Academic and Medical form, and delivery must be made by December 15, 2015. On the same day, Application part II will be released, containing letters of introduction, authorizations, etc., whose deadline is 01/03/2016.

Phase 4: Interview with the family of the 2 finalists

The finalists of the selection will be called to participate in a personal interview in Portuguese, and the parents of those called up may also be present. After conducting the interviews, they begin filling out the online form “Application Part I”. The appointment for the interview must be made by January 3, 2015.

According to information reported in the AFS website, the announcement of the names of the winners will take place on January 15, 2015. In turn, the departure of approved students to the US is scheduled for August 2016.
