In the race to combat new coronavirus and in constant research in search of a vaccine or one medicine for the virus, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
A ivermectin, a drug administered against parasites, such as head lice, could be proven effective against Covid-19.

Hope came through an in vitro study conducted by researchers at the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia. The research pointed out that the medicine is capable of killing the new coronavirus in 48 hours.
In addition to these scientists, others around the world are constantly working on tests to verify the efficacy of numerous drugs, already applied for other diseases, as allies in the elimination of the new coronavirus. Among them are chloroquine, drugs used in the treatment of AIDS and, more recently, ivermectin.

“One of the strategies we use around the world is to try to reposition some other drug that is already known. That is, to test its effectiveness in the new disease, ”she adds.
Ivermectin is indicated as a medicine against parasites, such as head lice, but it has already received tests for dengue and zika, mosquito-borne diseases aedes aegypti, and H1N1, also caused by virus.
“We found that a single dose can essentially remove all viral RNA (from Covid-19) within 48 hours. In 24 hours there is already a significant reduction”, he argued. Kylie Wagstaff, lead author of the study.
However, the specialist pointed out that the study was carried out in vitro, with cells, and tests on human beings are still necessary: “Ivermectin is a drug that is widely used and considered safe. […] But we need to find out now what dosage would be most effective in humans. This is our next step.”
Thus, as Fiocruz infectologist Fernando Bozza highlighted, Kylie underlined that, in the pandemic scenario, a known drug is faster in reaching an effective treatment. “As there is no approved treatment, if we have a compound that is already available around the world and it turns out to be effective, that can help people. Realistically, it will be a while before we get a vaccine.”
ATTENTION! It is worth remembering that ivermectin is a medication and must not be taken without a doctor's prescription. And as it brings the medical leaflet, the medicine is contraindicated for use by patients with hypersensitivity to ivermectin or other components of this medicine; patients with meningitis or other disorders of the Central Nervous System that may affect the blood-brain barrier, due to its effects on GABA-ergic receptors in the brain.
