The FAB is one of the three Armed Forces of Brazil, which also comprises the Navy and the Army, and it is also the largest air force in Latin America in terms of number of soldiers, number of planes and power of fire.
According to information on the official FAB page, if you want to become an aviator and fighter pilot he needs to pass the selection for the Training Course for Aviation Officers (CFOAV) at the Air Force Academy (AFA) which is located in Pirassununga, 210 km from São Paulo capital.
The dispute for a vacancy in the AFA is very competitive and can be compared to the competition in entrance exams for medicine in public universities.
In the AFA selection process, candidates must take theoretical tests, in addition to physical, psychological and health tests. He also takes the Military Piloting Aptitude Test, known as TAPMIL, in which the psychomotor potential for piloting and cognitive skills such as attention and reasoning space.
The FAB also has a High School, the Preparatory School for Air Cadets (EPCAR), located in the city of Barbacena, in the interior of Minas Gerais. Those who attend EPCAR do not need to take a new entrance exam for the AFA, because part of the vacancies is reserved for students who, at the end of the course, had the highest grades and were approved in TAPMIL.
The course at the Air Force Academy is carried out on a boarding basis. The student has military and academic instructions. At the end of the four years, a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration is awarded, with an emphasis on Public Administration; and Bachelor of Aeronautical Sciences, with specialization in Military Aviation.
To perform the first flight, the Cadets dedicate themselves, initially, to studying aircraft manuals and flight procedures. He has to know all the theory before starting the practical instructions, which are carried out in the second and fourth year of the course.
The pilot's first test plane is the T-25 in which the cadets learn the elementary rules of flight, in addition to performing maneuvers and acrobatics. In the fourth year, the T-27 Tucano is used, which flies faster and higher.
Upon graduating from the AFA, Cadets become Aspiring Officials and head to the city of Natal (RN), where they spend a year receiving instructions in the Operational Specialization Program (PESOP) in the chosen combat aviation at the end of the fourth year of the academy: Hunting; Rotary Wings; Transport; Patrol or Reconnaissance.
PESOP is administratively coordinated by Wing 10 and operationally by the Tactical and Specialized Instruction Group (GITE) and by the three air units based in Natal. From January to March, interns attend the Air Tactics Course (CTATAE), at GITE, where they learn the principles and theoretical guidelines necessary to act in combat. The course also prepares the Aspirant to assume responsibilities as a FAB Officer.
Then they are forwarded to the squadrons according to aviation:
In the advanced part of the course, trainees learn the specific missions of each aviation, such as example, combat missions (dogfight), aerial shooting, use of weapons (air-to-ground), reconnaissance and search.
The aircraft used in training are: A-29 Super Tucano, for fighter aviators; C-95 Bandeirante, for transport, reconnaissance and patrol aviation interns; and the H-50 Esquilo, for Rotary Wings. Each Aspirant performs, on average, 100 hours of flight during the year.
The modern aircraft used by the FAB ship around 30 basic operating systems, considering only those that the pilot must be able to operate (eg avionics, which is the interface aircraft pilot; alert system; lighting; of fuel; brake; of oxygen; frost protection; navigation; of communication; etc).
