The truck maker Scania confirmed that it will stop its activities in a planned and fractional way, following a trend that affects the entire Brazilian automotive sector.
Production at the factory located in São Bernardo do Campo, on the ABC Paulista, will be interrupted for two days a week, starting on April 28th. In addition, the ABC Metallurgists Union announced that Scania employees will have a period of ten days of collective vacation, which will start on June 10th.

The automaker employs around 4,500 workers, 3,000 of whom work directly in production. The union guarantees that all employees have already been informed about the stoppages since last week.
The justification given by the Swedish company for the measure is the slowdown in the truck market in Brazil and in other Latin American countries, such as Argentina and Chile. Scania bases its decision on the working hours flexibility agreement signed in 2013 with the union representing the workers.
The vice-president of the ABC Paulista Metalworkers Union, Carlos Caramelo, confirmed the justifications given by Scania. “The situation was further aggravated by the lack of parts, the anticipation of sales in 2022 from Euro 6 models and, mainly, by the drop in consumption and the rise in interest rates in our country”, he stated.
With the announcement of a partial stoppage in its operations, Scania only confirms a movement that had already been noticed.
In March, the company ended the second working day at the factory in São Bernardo do Campo, which employed around 200 employees.
In addition, in the same period the company chose not to renew the contracts of professionals hired on a temporary basis.
As previously mentioned, life for vehicle manufacturers in Brazil has not been easy, especially for those operating in the truck segment, as is the case with Scania.
The National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea) forecasts an 11% drop in sales in 2023, compared to the first months of 2022. The drop in production should reach around 20%.
One of the main factors that influenced the decrease in truck sales was the scenario of high interest rates, which caused the lack of credit and the stagnation of the economy.
Furthermore, the new Euro 6 engine standard, which is now required for trucks, causes an increase of up to 30% in vehicle prices, which discourages consumers from buying new vehicles.
