The region known as Matopiba, which covers the states of Tocantins, Maranhão, Bahia and Piauí, has been identified as a new agricultural frontier in the country. However, environmentalists warn that this agricultural expansion has come at a significant environmental cost.
According to satellites from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), half of the deforestation registered in the Cerrado is concentrated in this region. The advance of agricultural activities has resulted in loss of vegetation and environmental degradation, putting at risk the biodiversity and unique ecosystems of the Cerrado.
Still according to appeals made by environmentalists, it is essential that measures are implemented of protection and sustainable development in this area to mitigate the negative impacts on the environment environment.
Deter is used by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), working as an instantaneous survey of forest cover alerts across the country. Its main purpose is to assist in the work of environmental inspection.
According to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change (MMA), data analysis reveals that most of the deforestation in the Cerrado, about 77%, occurred in rural properties that are publicly registered in the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR).
This means that the government is able to identify those responsible for these areas, whether they are owners or squatters in the process of land regularization.
Furthermore, 15.9% of deforestation occurred in rural settlements, while a smaller portion, 4.2%, occurred in areas of environmental preservation. The municipalities of São Desidério and Jaborandi, located in Western Bahia, occupy the top positions in terms of deforestation in the Cerrado.
Together, they account for more than 11% of the deforested area. In addition to these, the list includes Balsas, in Maranhão, and Barreiras and Cocos, other cities in Bahia that are recognized for the development of agribusiness in their regions.
