In April of this year, a man was arrested at Boston International Airport for carrying an object that appears to be a bladed weapon. These are types of weapons that can be useful for attacking or defending, such as small knives, pocket knives and other sharp objects. This time, the reason was a “vampire straw” that the passenger carried in his hand luggage.
Despite appearing to be a harmless name, mainly linked to a fictional being such as a vampire, the term is known to define a self-defense tool that has other uses. Similar to a straw, the sharp object may not be noticed by such naivety, but it is totally fatal.

The self-defense tool is a straw made of titanium, with a very pointed tip. The Massachusetts investigation reported to CNN that the object was confiscated and that it had been purchased from Szabo Inc. The store sells titanium objects and the seized straw costs US$ 85, equivalent to R$ 424 converted.
The straw is multipurpose and has been described as something the customer can drink milkshakes from without too much effort, as well as being designed similar to a dagger. It doesn't draw attention (because it's a straw) and can be used easily in public. In addition to Szabo, other companies also manufacture straws designed for self-defense.
Permission to carry a vampire straw depends directly on location, as indicated by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). In Massachusetts, for example, it is illegal to carry “certain sharp instruments,” as police told CNN.
The straw, therefore, was analyzed and fits this illegality in the state. Whoever carries this object is subject to a fine or up to five years imprisonment if he has a criminal record. At the airport, as informed by the TSA, any sharp object in hand luggage is prohibited.
