What is an Autarchy?

What is Autarchy? One autarchy and the quality of being self-sufficient. Not only in terms of not needing to import, but also surviving without outside help. An autarchy works well even if it is completely isolated.

A trade embargo or natural phenomenon that isolated it from the rest of the world would not affect an Autarchy's ability to survive.

Concept of Autarchy

An autarchy is a closed economy. It is an isolationist nation. The term can refer to a country or to the system itself.

The term refers to the state of self-sufficiency or a completely autonomous entity.

Whether or not a country is an autarchy can be the result of deliberate policy or good luck. A nation with plenty of land, raw materials and the right climate to produce food can become self-sufficient.

However, some countries become deliberately autarchy. Their governments avoid contact and trade with other nations and learn to become self-sufficient.

Canada and Australia, for example, have sophisticated economies, lots of land and raw materials. Also, they can produce enough food to feed their citizens.

Japan and the UK, however, rely on trade, i.e. imports and exports. Japan needs to import fuel, food and various raw materials.

Canada and Australia are much closer to being mayors than the UK and Japan. In other words, Canada or Australia would survive in total isolation better than the UK or Japan.
