About 50 Spix's Macaws (Cyanopsitta spixii) may arrive in Brazil in 2023. After almost 20 years, when it began to be considered extinct, there will be a reintroduction of the birds in the country, with this amount coming from Germany. The reintroduction is a project to recompose the Brazilian caatinga with the species, which was threatened.
You animals should arrive in the month of January, as pointed out by Camile Lugarini, executive coordinator of the National Action Plan (PAN) for the Spix's Macaw, from the Chico Mendes Institute for Conservation of Biodiversity (ICMBio).

Predators are the main risk that Spix's Macaws are running in the wild. Of 20 birds that have been released since June, three have already been killed by birds of prey. The researchers are also concerned that the birds may disperse away from the areas monitored by the survey, increasing the risk of capture by traffickers.
Still in 2020, in Curaçá (BA), about 52 Spix's Macaws were brought from Germany. Thus, in the municipality of Bahia, the government of Brazil created a kind of preservation site to ensure that these birds are reintroduced into nature.
Also in Curaçá, a place was built so that the Macaws could freely enjoy the environment. In June 2022, only eight macaws were reintroduced to the wild. On December 10th, another 12 Macaws were also released.
Now, there are 30 macaws taking part in this project in Bahia. The nursery has already yielded three chicks, and they will soon be in contact with nature.
To date, the main nursery for reintroducing these birds into the wild is still located in Germany.
The researchers are waiting for the transport of the macaws to be released by the agricultural surveillance in Brazil. Due to the avian flu outbreak that is affecting Europe, it is believed that the wait could be a little longer.
“If it is not possible to bring the birds in January, we will check if we can manage to release the animals that were born here in Brazil, because an important thing is the number of birds. The greater the number in the group, the greater the chances of success”, said the coordinator.
“It's no use releasing one or two, or three or four. In addition to having a whole criterion, which takes into account genetics and health, the number of animals is also an important factor”, concluded Lugarini.
