But what's the problem with consuming fake cinnamon?

All this confusion represents a real problem, since the Cinnamomum cassia contains a higher content of coumarin, a substance that is toxic to humans when consumed in large quantities.

It is critical to be aware of this difference when choosing cinnamon, looking for the safest variety to ensure health.

One test to know if the cinnamon powder you have is Cassia (fake) or not, it is done through iodine, dripping a few drops of the product on the powder. If the cinnamon is fake, the substance will take on shades of navy blue to dark brown.

When the cinnamon is still “on a stick” it is even easier to differentiate, the real one being lighter and with more folds.

Cinnamon is used for a variety of purposes, from spices, teas, to healing oils and incense. Therefore, it is important to be aware of its properties, contraindications and origin.
